Hudson Bay Credit Union is pleased to share with you what our credit union has done with our "Growing Green" practices. Our Green initative became very rewarding and we wish to share some of our successes with the community and our members.

Our Growing Green Team
Our team promotes and encourages the principles of “Reducing, Reusing, Recycling and Returning the "Green” Favour within our office and the community.

April "Growing Green" Recycle Display
Recycling
- All newspaper, flyers, cardboard, shredded paper and bottles are placed in bins and recycled.
- We partnered with the local high school and assisted them with recycling plastic shopping bags.
- Recycling Containers for bottles and cans have also been set up in the community, with monies being donated to charity, recreation or community organizations.
Reducing
- Individual hand towels were placed in employee washrooms reducing the amount of paper towels being used.
- No more Styrofoam! Glass plates, cups and glasses were donated for the staff room.
- Staff became more conscious of their paper useage and are now printing and photocopying double sided.
- A major clean up in the office produced an abundance of binders, pens, and file folders which contributed to a sharp decrease in stationery expenses.
- Incentives were offered to those bringing glass plates to the Stewart Hawke Community Pancake Breakfast rather than using paper plates. This was very successful and we thank the community and Stewart Hawke for their support!
- We reduce the amount of paper within our business process - staff receive their payslip via secure email. For board and staff meetings, we circulate less paper and project presentations onto the screen.
- Newsletter available on our web site.
- Members can enter draws and find out what's new through our web site.
Reusing
- Scrap paper has been cut and distributed to be used as note paper.
- We use recycled items in our promotions such crocheted shopping bags out of the plastic store bags made by Melita Poley and have purchased recycled items such as our jar grippers and recycled shopping bags for giveaways for promotions.
Return the "Green" Favour
- We use glass plates for our annual meeting and the High School Green Team partners with us helping set up and clear tables and receive a donation for their for continuing their green community projects.
Heritage Days Parade - we commit to making our yearly Heritage Day's floats constructed entirely with recycled products.

In 2008 we placed first in the Commercial division!
“Re”ta, our tire lady graced the front of the float with a decorative hat and jewelry made from recycled products

- A mini-credit union was constructed with the walls built from plastic pop bottles and a roof shingled in tin cans. The skirt of the float was made entirely from plastic bags. Decorated golf carts and clowns accompanied the float along the parade route and distributed jar grippers (made from 100% post consumer recycled tires) as well as candy for the children.
